Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) uses metal tools to treat soft-tissue dysfunction by breaking down adhesions and scar tissue. These tools allow the physical therapist to identify and treat myofascial restrictions. The results of these treatments improve range of motion, reduce hypersensitivity, decrease pain, loosen scar tissue/adhesions, and improve circulation to the soft tissue. Our tools cause minimal discomfort and the sensation experienced by the patient typically is “hurts so good.” The mechanotransduction caused by the tools also improves the alignment and orientation of soft tissue fibers.
Notable brands of IASTM tools include: Graston, ASTYM, Smart Tools, ROCK tools, and EDGEility tools. Our practitioner has been trained in the FRAMS (Fibrosis Release And Myofascial Stretching) and EDGEility tools for IASTM. We can cater to every area of the body and adapt to the tolerance of each patient with our 4 leveled tool system.
Patients that have nerve impingement, knots, scar tissue, tenderness, tendinitis, muscle tightness, catching/clicking, or any other soft-tissue dysfunction, will greatly benefit from this technique. Be sure to drink plenty of water and apply heat to the area afterwards. You may be somewhat sore after the treatment. The sensation can be compared to post-exercise soreness.
